2024 Canadian GP Qualifying: Russell takes pole

The Canadian Grand Prix qualifying session saw George Russell claim pole position, edging out Max Verstappen despite a dead heat in their lap times. Russell will lead the grid ahead of Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris. The one-hour session was split into three segments, with Q1 and Q2 eliminating five cars each before the top-10 shootout in Q3.

In Q1, Verstappen initially set the pace before Russell and Hamilton surpassed him. Yuki Tsuonda also impressed, securing second place. Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Ocon, Nico Hulkenberg, and Zhou Guanyu were among those knocked out in this stage.

Q2 saw rain spots at the beginning, prompting drivers to set quick laps early on. Norris briefly led before Hamilton and then Russell went faster. Leclerc, Sainz, Sargeant, Magnussen, and Gasly were eliminated in this stage.

In Q3, Russell set the initial pace, with Verstappen matching his time on the final runs. Norris will start third, followed by Piastri, Ricciardo, Alonso, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Stroll, and Albon.

For the Canadian Grand Prix, Russell will start on pole, with Verstappen alongside him on the front row. The grid is set for an exciting race with McLaren’s Norris close behind in third.
