Can Vegas Tourism Sponsor WNBA Aces for $100K?

The WNBA is currently investigating the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s $100,000 annual sponsorship to Aces players for this season and next. While the sponsorship does not violate the salary cap rules, there are questions about whether it is fair and in line with the spirit of the cap regulations.

Aces coach Becky Hammon expressed that most sponsorships typically involve the top two players on a team, but this situation involved the entire team. Last year, the Aces faced consequences from the league due to violations regarding impermissible player benefits and workplace policies.

Despite the investigation, the head of the Las Vegas authority, Steve Hill, believes they acted within the guidelines and in the best interest of both the city and the players. The players themselves were thrilled by the sponsorship, with point guard Chelsea Gray stating that it shows the city is investing in them and supporting their efforts on and off the court.

The $100,000 sponsorship is significant, even exceeding the salaries of some Aces players. Rookie Kate Martin expressed gratitude for the bonus, emphasizing that it recognizes the hard work and talent of the entire team. This sponsorship also helps close the pay gap for top players like A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum.

Overall, the sponsorship has been met with gratitude and excitement from the Aces players, who see it as a positive step in supporting and valuing their contributions to the team and the community. This move by the Las Vegas authority is seen as a way to further promote and elevate women’s basketball in the city.
