Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys nearing reunion

The Dallas Cowboys have yet to draft a running back through the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft, leaving the possibility open for a reunion with former star Ezekiel Elliott. While the team did have interest in Texas running back Jonathon Brooks, he was selected by the Carolina Panthers before the Cowboys had a chance to pick. With four more picks remaining in the draft, the Cowboys may still consider bringing Elliott back to Dallas.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed interest in re-signing Elliott, who spent last season with the New England Patriots after seven years with the Cowboys. Jones believes Elliott still has the ability to be a starting running back in the NFL. With Tony Pollard leaving in free agency, there is a void in the Cowboys’ running back room, with inexperienced players like Rico Dowdle, Royce Freeman, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner currently on the roster.

Elliott had a solid season with the Patriots in 2023, rushing for 642 yards on 184 attempts and scoring three touchdowns. He also added 51 receptions for 313 yards and two touchdowns. After Rhamondre Stevenson’s injury, Elliott’s workload increased, and he received double-digit carries in the final six games of the season.

While Jones has not committed to bringing back Elliott just yet, he acknowledged that a reunion is a possibility depending on how the final four rounds of the draft play out. Given the lack of experience in the Cowboys’ running back room outside of Freeman, bringing back Elliott could solidify the position and provide a familiar face in the offense.

In conclusion, the potential reunion between Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys is still up in the air, but the team remains interested in bringing back the veteran running back. With a void in the running back depth chart and Elliott’s proven ability to contribute on the field, a return to Dallas could be a beneficial move for both parties. Stay tuned to see how the draft unfolds and whether Elliott ultimately rejoins the Cowboys for the upcoming season.
