Drone Day LA, hosted by Our Genetic Legacy, is set to take place on May 26, 2024, at Islah Academy in Los Angeles, California. This exciting event will feature live demonstrations, interactive workshops, participant panels, and information on how girls from Los Angeles can become FAA-certified drone pilots and participate in mapping trips. The event is free and open to the public, offering activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Attendees will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of drones in action through live flight demonstrations and engage in hands-on workshops designed to teach the basics of drone operation and safety protocols. They can also speak with current program participants who will share their experiences and the impact of the program on their lives.
“Our Genetic Legacy is dedicated to changing historical narratives about BIPOC history through innovative technology-based solutions,” said Shellie Baxter, CEO of the organization. “Drone Day LA represents a significant step in bringing these solutions to historically underserved communities in Los Angeles.”
The event is part of Our Genetic Legacy’s larger mission to revolutionize the museum experience through their virtual We The People Museum, which employs advanced drone technology and innovative youth-led storytelling. The museum, designed by a team of LA-based architects, will be globally accessible in late June. Past mapping trips organized by the organization have included locations such as Julian, Pauma Valley, Ghana, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
Islah Academy, where Drone Day LA will take place, was founded in 2014 by Imam Jihad Saafir and the South LA Muslim Community. The Academy provides a safe learning environment for children in the Inner City, combining Islamic principles with academic knowledge to help students succeed in their growth. Islah Academy is also at the forefront of implementing Restorative Justice as a tool to break the School-to-Prison Pipeline.
