Officer hit during funeral procession dies after 10 days

The Corpus Christi Police Department recently announced the tragic death of Senior Officer Vicente Ortiz Jr., who was hit by a vehicle while on his police motorcycle on May 21. Officer Ortiz was working traffic control during a funeral procession at the time of the accident. He was a respected 15-year veteran of the police department and leaves behind his wife and two children.

To support Officer Ortiz’s family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to raise funds. The campaign, which was launched on May 26, has already received 124 donations and raised approximately $12,000 of its $60,000 goal.

Officer Ortiz was a hero in more ways than one, having been twice honored by the Corpus Christi Police Department for his courageous and life-saving actions. In 2016, he received a Lifesaving Award for rescuing a man who had hung himself by the neck. In another instance in 2014, he was recognized with a lifesaving ribbon for providing CPR to his father, former Mayor Vicente Ortiz Sr., who had collapsed in front of the family. Thanks to Officer Ortiz’s quick actions, his father’s life was saved.

Sadly, Officer Ortiz is the second Corpus Christi police officer to lose his life in the line of duty in 2024, following Officer Kyle Hicks’ death in April. Furthermore, the day after Officer Ortiz was hit, Aransas Pass Police Department Patrol Capt. Alvin Luker was also involved in a serious motorcycle accident. Capt. Luker suffered significant injuries, including broken bones, internal damage, and nerve damage.

To assist Capt. Luker during his recovery, a GoFundMe page has been established. The community is encouraged to donate and show their support for another law enforcement officer facing similar challenges.

The loss of Officer Ortiz and the injuries sustained by Capt. Luker serve as somber reminders of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day. The community is urged to come together to support these brave individuals and their families during these difficult times.

In conclusion, the Corpus Christi Police Department and the wider community mourn the loss of Officer Vicente Ortiz Jr. and extend their thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones.
