Scientific Sustainability Forum kicks off in Beijing

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution “International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024-2033” in August 2023. This resolution aims to leverage science for sustainable development, foster a culture of science, and engage all stakeholders in advancing science for the benefit of humankind. UNESCO is leading the efforts of the Science Decade through collaboration with various partners, including the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

Recently, UNESCO, in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, organized the “International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development Forum” in Beijing, China. The forum aimed to expand the outreach of the Science Decade, engage with the scientific community, government entities, private sectors, and civil societies, and mobilize stakeholders for effective implementation of the Decade. Esteemed scientists, experts, and government officials from nine countries shared their perspectives and approaches to advance scientific knowledge for sustainable development.

The Director of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for East Asia highlighted China’s innovative contributions to basic science and emphasized the importance of international scientific cooperation in building a sustainable future. The forum also addressed the challenges facing science for sustainable development, such as limited recognition of basic science, insufficient investment, and the need to balance different development goals.

Experts at the forum emphasized the importance of open science, data sharing, talent development, and ethical-driven knowledge utilization in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The forum underscored the need to strengthen public scientific literacy, promote international scientific cooperation, and support basic science for a better future. The Science Decade aligns with the theme of the 2024 ZGC Forum, “Innovation: Building a Better World”, showcasing the international collaboration and commitment to advancing science for sustainable development.

Overall, the “International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development Forum” provided a platform for global scientific dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration to address societal challenges and promote a sustainable future for all.
