Stephanie “Amma” Young Named Woman of the Month for October 2023 by P.O.W.E.R. – Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized

Stephanie “Amma” Young, a versatile artist and educator from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been recognized as the Woman of the Month for October 2023 by P.O.W.E.R. (Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized) for her exceptional achievements in the fields of education and art.

With over 30 years of experience, Stephanie is a multi-disciplined artist, teacher, minister, and folk artist specializing in African dance and percussion instruments. She is also a talented costume designer, singer, fine art painter, designer, and photographer. Throughout her career, Stephanie has been dedicated to teaching traditional West African dance, drumming, and singing, and has served as a mentor to young folk artists.

Stephanie’s passion for folk arts dates back to 1975 when she began studying and performing with the renowned Arthur Hall African American Dance Ensemble. She went on to study with Youssouf Koumbassa and Mbemba Bangoura at the Community Education Center in Philadelphia, further honing her skills in the 90s. Stephanie holds a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from The University of Arts and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education Curriculum from Grand Canyon University, showcasing her commitment to both her artistic and educational pursuits.

Throughout her career, Stephanie has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, reflecting her dedication to bringing cultural awareness and equity opportunities to children and families in Philadelphia. In addition to her artistic endeavors, Stephanie is a retired teacher from the School District of Philadelphia, where she served for 20 years.

In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys traveling and cooking, rounding out her vibrant and diverse skill set, which has been recognized by P.O.W.E.R. for her outstanding contributions.
